Handcrafting Puppets In The Heart Of London
As a London-based portrait and documentary photographer, I’m always drawn to stories that highlight the relationship between people and their communities. Living in Islington, one of the most vibrant areas of London, I’m fortunate to be surrounded by creative spaces, and the Little Angel Theatre is one of those special places.
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting one of the workshops of the Little Angel Theatre, and it was a truly inspiring experience. For over 60 years, this theatre has been a beacon of creativity, handcrafting puppets in the same traditional way for decades. In a world where everything seems to move at lightning speed, stepping into their workshop felt like stepping back in time. Watching the skilled artists Oliver and Ash at work was almost therapeutic—seeing how much care and attention goes into each puppet reminded me that good things take time.
The sense of heritage and craft here is palpable, both for the craft of making puppets and what it means to the community at large. It’s clear why Little Angel Theatre has been a cherished part of North London for so long. It’s not just a theatre; it’s a hub for creativity, imagination, and storytelling—right at the heart of our community.
