The Humanity And The Warmth Of Bard Jungr

Barb Jungr, a name synonymous with boldness and talent in the world of cabaret, jazz and theatre welcomed me into her seaside home, not far from the picturesque town of Worthing. Nestled amidst stunning views of the South Downs and the sea, Barb's home exudes huge warmth and charm that reflect her vibrant personality. Whether she's singing to a theatre of music lovers or welcoming you into ger living room, Barb is one of those people who instantly knows how to make everyone feel comfortable and happy to be there.

Barb's journey from the alternative cabaret circuit to becoming one of the UK's finest singers has been nothing short of remarkable. With accolades such as being hailed as "One of the world's great cabaret singers" by Time Out New York and earning a legendary Perrier Award, Barb's musical prowess knows no bounds.

Her endless radio and TV appearances both in the UK and across the pond in the USA showcase her versatility and depth as an artist. From BBC Radio 4 to PBS's The Kate, Barb's performances have captivated audiences worldwide, leaving an indelible mark on the music scene. Some of her fans might not know this, but Barb has a parallel life writing musicals for children. She is one of those people who is bursting at the seems with music and creativity and she can't wait to share it all.

During our photoshoot, I was struck by the poignant tribute Barb paid to her late mother, Ingrid, who had recently passed away after battling dementia. Barb's home is full with memories of her mother, from cherished photographs and paintings to decorative ceramics, Ingrid is very much present - and rightly so. Even Barb's cardigan was knitted by her mum and in one particularly touching moment, Barb sat in one of her mum's old armchairs, facing the chair where Ingrid used to sit to enjoy the garden. For me it was quite moving.

But, you know, despite that, or perhaps because of it, Barb's infectious energy and warmth filled the room, making it impossible not to smile. Even her beloved dog, Bambi, added to the laughter and joy that filled the house.

The At Home series has afforded me the privilege of stepping into the lives of individuals whom I admire and respect. It's a journey that allows me to connect with my subjects on a deeper level, unraveling the stories behind their public personas.

Unlike the hustle and bustle of wedding photography, these intimate photo shoots offer a chance to truly immerse myself in the moment, exploring different locations and ideas while forging genuine connections with my subjects.

As a London documentary photographer, I am grateful for the opportunity to document the lives of extraordinary individuals like Barb Jungr, capturing not just their image, but the essence of who they are. Through my lens, I strive to create lasting memories that resonate with authenticity and emotion, reflecting the beauty of the human experience.
